Robin Windsor: Strictly Come Dancing professional dies aged 44 - BBC News
⚡
well if you've only got forty-four years, what are you supposed to do then
well first you’ve got to last the full forty-four, and there’s no guarantee of that
then you’ve got to think about what you’re planning to do with yourself the whole time
you might just stay home and keep your eyes on the screen, nothing wrong with it - it’s just leisure
you might not want to do anything
you might buy the cheap lottery tickets
or you might start illegally cleaning the doorway of a West-End theatre; no-one’s complaining because you are anti-graffiti, and
start practicing dance out on the green at about three years old because there’s no space in the living-room behind all the big-tub containers and Pringles packs
bloody freezing but you dance anyway
you got used to funny looks by the three-foot fence with the rust flakes that all the twelve year olds climb over
and then move to the city where people don’t look at like you you’re odd, they look at you like you're an obstacle
(out of place)
which makes it all the more inviting to go and be in the not-right places
so it’s the early 00s and you’re sneaking your way into a Polish-run gay bar that doesn’t charge for admission and free-pours its drink
meet a man
fall in love with a man
let him make a few important decisions
wait for him to make a bad one that everyone else can’t forgive him for so then forget about him
move back to the city
and go back to cleaning doorways and windows until the owner steps outside for a smoke and you just go through a whole routine, right there, in the alley, yes with the wheelie bins, and the puddles, yes it actually happened there
and shake his hand and get an audition
run late for it
make it anyway
wind up inside a theatre that leads you to a performance that leads you to a better life that leads you to a better performance and that leads you to
a world of people who adore you, or at least are decent enough at pretending
a nation of fans
a young family
be part of the spotlight for a few years and then take some well-earned time for the children
cook good dinners, good dinners, with veg that doesn’t all look the same and meats straight from the counter - good food
get your friends all talking about it
think about that man sometimes
go to bed with your wife
make love to your wife now that there are enough children running around the place- slowly
show love to your doorstep
leave the heating on but switch to an all-renewable energy supplier
have people who care for you
have people who count on you
be there and listen enough times for them to know
drink some water
and by that point, you’ve pretty much used up the forty-four years.

Before you go, a message to you, dear reader…
First of all - thank you for reading ⚡newsflash⚡ all the way down to here. Attention spans aren’t what they used to be, and that’s because all of the answers are less than seven seconds long.
You clearly don’t believe that, which is why I’m now talking to you.
If you’re like me, you believe in the power of stories, and in the importance of asking ourselves questions. Newsflash publishes a new edition daily, calling into question what’s happening in our world, and inviting readers to use their imagination.
I don’t have anything, really, to sell. I just believe in kindness, respect and mutual growth.
That said, ⚡newsflash⚡ takes a lot of time and effort. Most of it goes unrewarded - not too many people stop to show that they care.
That’s fine by me. But I do need to pay the bills, and my efforts here tie me up on most evenings.
To help me survive, you can do one of two things:
Become a free subscriber.
Become a paid subscriber.
Becoming a free subscriber helps me showcase my writing - if I have 1000 readers, you’re definitely helping me to land my next job. Boom - bills paid.
Becoming a paid subscriber is only for those who are in a position to do so, and includes some exclusive ⚡newsflash⚡ benefits. If you’re curious, you can find out more about that here.
Every subscriber really counts, to me. There isn’t a single name on my list I don’t value.
If you can, take a moment to type your email address below, and together, we can start to show that there’s a new place for the story in the 21st-century.
If you enjoy the content I provide, but aren’t ready to become a fully paid subscriber, you can simply make a one-time donation here at Buy Me A Coffee, if you can. I value all of my readers - paid or not - but all contributions are, of course, deeply appreciated.
