I was sitting alone in the darkened cabin when I heard a knock at the door. Now, you know me well enough, and you know I don’t feel all that comfortable being served. Even if I am paying, really, it’s only because I’ve got all this money, and I don’t know what on Earth to do with it all. Anyway, I’m getting distracted.
The stewardess slid open the partition to find me lying on the bed in near darkness. The windows had been dimmed so that only the smallest amount of light came into the room. She seemed thoroughly unapologetic about having disturbed me, and even turned on one of the cabin lights as she entered. She then spoke rather loudly, and not without a note of hostility:
“Is everything satisfactory with your flight, Mr. Liu?”
I had to squint to adjust to the newfound brightness in the room. The stewardess remained standing over me as I craned my neck up towards her.
“Yes, yes, quite…” I said. “Quite satisfactory.”
“We will soon be serving dinner, would you care to browse our in-flight menu?” She did not make direct eye contact with me, but went on staring absently into space.
“Oh, uh, yes, yes please,” I said. “If it isn’t too much hassle.”
The stewardess parted her lips in order to speak further, but then hesitated, and turned quickly to walk out of the room.
When she returned, I was suddenly struck by how beautiful this woman was. I was now standing, and she looked up at me in a way I can only describe as a curious. For a moment, the sunlight that was now streaming through the windows caught in the brown of her eyes, flashing a momentary gold. I thought I saw that her eyebrows were slightly furrowed, but this was the first time that I had seen her face, and I did not know if this was a subtle gesture or simply her usual expression.
“This is our menu,” she said, in a much deeper - although somehow friendlier - voice than before. She cast a glance at the empty glass on the cabin’s television stand. “Would you care for another drink? We have an excellent selection of wines available, as well as a number of spirits.”
“Oh, no, I should… I should be alright, thanks. I’ve got some water in my bag.”
And she looked at me again rather suspiciously. This time the furrow of her brows was apparent, and I thought I caught a quick smile.
“Well,” she said, after a moment. “I’ll leave this menu with you, then, and leave you to make up your mind.” With that, she left the cabin once more.
I didn’t see her again until I was on the same flight, my usual voyage to Sydney, several years later. At which point, you all know what she asked me, and you all know that the rest is history.
To this day, I’m not all too sure how it happened. But my granddaughter tells me I must have had “risks.”
