“Oh, Arsene, I was asleep…”
“There was something I needed to tell you. I wanted you to be the first to know.”
“Mmph… the first to know what?”
“We’re finally sure. After so long. We’re finally sure, Marie…”
There was a moment of silence on the line.
“… yeah?”
“Yeah, we’re sure.”
There was another moment of silence.
“Why did you have to call me, Arsene?” Marie was in a tired, quiet state of disbelief. “It’s three o’clock here… in the morning, I remind you.”
“How could I forget? You’re the person I call, on the rare occasions I actually do anything significant.”
“Yes, but… this is… this is major. I would have thought you’d have other things on your mind…”
“When do I have anything else on my mind?”
There was another moment of silence. Through the curtains, the orange glow of Marseilles at night felt like a distant sun.
“Mmph… you’re mad, you know.”
“Probably,” Arsene was gazing out of the laboratory window, at a desert landscape basked in sunlight. “In fact… definitely.”
Marie raised her tired eyebrows. The phone shuffled against her pillow.
“Well,” said Arsene, lost in his own thoughts. “It’s nice to be sure of something.”
