By the time his hand hit on my face, I was almost expecting it
I am not someone who go with complaining I go with the power to forgive This is because of some things I tell you a story
One time, Adamu was a good man, a very good man He came from the nearby river-fields, the place with the muddy onions and pepper-bush We met not in the market, but after the market (so-so kind of place, I don’t like) I go for some people, because I like to chit-chat and sit with the people who go with some life
I meet many people here Some people not my kind of person Many of the men, not my type, on account of the violence and the lying and the unfair Many men are unfair I say go to these men because I don’t want to feel the unfair I want to have some talk and then go if I have what I need
So this is how I met Adamu after the market waiting by the fever-tree every week At first I do no talk with him, why do it he waiting by that tree there, could be waiting for any so-so, who say me? Ami say so, Ami say to me go and talk with him, the man want to go with you I say, how do you know this She say, he wait by the tree alone, he always go there at the time you walking back to the home blind you must be, girl go
So I go and I talk with this man, name he says is Adamu first time, just small words: how is it with you, a good day today, yes, it is nice to see you and this happen for every week, almost for half a year, you know and then he tell me, clear as the morning sunrise:
you are the woman for my dream
or it was something like that, I tell you, my memory is no good but i tell him
you are fool
but we say okay in some way, and he come to my house with arm full of vegetables, many vegetables, I mean enough to feed to a small horse and he cook Adamu goes very good with cooking and me, my family, my father, my mother, my sisters, my brother, my uncle and Adamu, we eat best karanga nyama of life, we all say
Adamu is still a good cook I am sure of it some things you do not lose but it has been going difficult, difficult these last years with no water we drink, and they say on the newsline water is okay, we will have water but the river-fields are all now dried up all dried up and Adamu’s family is starving
no onions no market no money
So I understand, Adamu is a good man but because of some things, old things we cannot control things are difficult now and I say to myself, let’s go with it, let’s go, let’s go because Adamu still is a good man
but now
when the time his hand hit on my face
I am almost expecting it
