“You know - I think the best part about this gig is that nobody expected me.”
“You might be thinking: wait - I recognise this guy. Wasn’t he in a time machine? Wasn’t he a lot younger? Yeah, I was in a time machine. I stepped out in the year 2024 and all of sudden I’m sixty-two and on wheels.”
[laughs]
“No, it’s true! It was a bit of a shock.”
[laughter]
“But anyway, after a long time away from these sorts of places - can you believe, they only just built the damn ramp? - I wanted to come back, make a couple of people laugh, and say some things about why it is that we’re here tonight, what it is that’s brought us together, and why there is real cause for celebration. And no, it’s not just because I got out of my chair.”
[laughter]
“When I was thinking about getting up here tonight, I had one thought on my mind only: there was a time in my life where I almost didn’t do any of this. There was a moment, I think I must have been about sixteen, seventeen… and I got offered work on my uncle’s farm for the summer. My mom wanted to drag me out to the city because she thought I was a looker…”
[laughter]
“I didn’t want to go to the city. I really liked my uncle. Great guy, and a farm in the hills of Dakota? There aren’t many places on Earth like that. I know, because I’ve been since. But I went with my mom.”
“It’s a long story - but that summer in the city, going to agency after agency, shoot after shoot, was, eventually, what got me noticed, and set me up in some pretty questionable movie-making. This was the 80s, and almost anything went.”
[laughs]
“But when I was sixteen, I wanted to go to that farm - and there was a moment where I was asked if I’d prefer to do that. I would have preferred to do that. But for some reason, I didn’t say anything, and I ended up in a time machine.”
“Fast forward forty years, and here we are. I make a point out of this moment in my young life, because it’s one of the few decisions I can say, with confidence, that I got right. I’ve had a lot of other choices to make since my teens, and a lot of them haven’t gone so well. But this one, this moment - which really, I can hardly take credit for - led me into a new world, full of fascinating people, and I have had my life totally changed by the power of cinema.”
“The people I am about to nominate are here because they are the best at what they do. They have, somewhere in their own lives, made the decisions that put them here - or, like myself, they’ve stumbled their way along, and are making it look incredibly cool.”
[laughter]
“But regardless - somewhere along the way - they are here because they have created things that have the power to change the lives of others. They have been part of that illusive, cinema magic, which puts sparks in the minds of so many. And, at some point… they might bring back the DeLorean.”
[laughs]
“That, wonderful, two-legged people of the audience, is a cause for celebration.”
[applause]
